This is a picture dear to my heart! I well remember lovely parties at Christmas and Easter and even a few on Guy Fawkes Night with White Fathers invited from Broome Hall. We lived in Wembley then, but spent many holidays with my grandparents at Hampton Cottage - the London County Council children's home run by Granny. Grandad worked in the City.
If you mean the smiling man just in front of Fr Van den Bosch, that is Alexander Stirling - my grandfather. The two women in the front are my grandmother, Madge Stirling and my mother, Anne Scott. The young woman behind Granny is the assistant at Hampton Cottage - her first name was Eileen - and the boy behind her right shoulder is Michael O'Shea, one of the lads at Hampton. The girl in the right of the photo is Mary Lacey, one of the girls.
I am struck by how very happy everyone looks! (I wonder where I was?) There are a lot of people missing from the photo, because there were 12 resident children for a start. |
