Mike Ellis writes (24th July 2010) :

"Peter Johnson, (in Religious life known as Abbot Cuthbert) very kindly invited a group of his peers to join him for a get together at his beautiful Abbey in Stone, Staffordshire on 24th/25th July 2010. This was the first in a series of two small events, designed to bring together Pelicans from the years 1959-1964 to help re-establish contacts and help maintain continuity among the last generation of White Fathers Pelicans. The second get together, is planned for Saturday 4th September 2010.

The event was a great success, with individuals arriving from as far afield as Antigua in the west, Kirriemuir in Scotland in the north and Surrey in the south.

The nine individuals who participated were; Pat McHale (Antigua), Raymond Lockey (Bristol), John Mattock (Coventry), Ian Scott (Kirriemuir), Peter Jennings (Birmingham), Paul Glover (Liverpool), Robbie Dempsey (Dublin), Fr Peter (Abbot Cuthbert) Johnson (Stone), Mike Ellis (Surrey).

The rendezvous started at about 12.00 on Saturday 24th July in the garden where Peter with the able assistance of Paul presented us with a wonderful selection of carefully bar-b-q'd foods which was accompanied by a variety of wines and beers to meet the requirements of all!

During the afternoon there was time for both sharing memories and catching up on what had happened to us during the last fifty years - much humour was evident and all were clearly enjoying themselves!  At five we joined Peter in church for Vespers.
Following some discussion on next steps Peter led us on a short walk through the beautiful countryside which included crossing a field under the watchful eye of a local herd of cattle which seemed bemused by the endless conversation emanating from the group.

We adjourned then to the local pub in Stone where we enjoyed a glass of local beer or not such local wine and then returned to the abbey.

Peter then demonstrated his culinary skills again on Saturday evening by proving us all with a delicious meal comprising two varieties of spaghetti with salads and dessert to follow.

Peter was extremely kind and generous to the group and provided very comfortable sleeping accommodation to all participants who stayed that night. Unfortunately, due to other family commitments on Sunday 25th July Raymond Lockey and Peter Jennings had to return home on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning we all attended Mass in the abbey church which was celebrated by Peter. We all very much enjoyed singing the Missa de Angelis which was the Mass selected to be sung that day. We all felt, that we may have contributed a little to the volume of sound being produced but possibly not much to the quality!

Following Mass, Peter and Paul then got the BBQ going again and a simple
lunch was enjoyed by those who were able to remain for the last event.

We all finally left Peter in peace again, at about 16.00 on Sunday 25th July with our sincere thanks ringing in his ears!

The entire weekend was a great joy and a pleasure to renew so many old acquaintances after so many years!

It is hoped that a good number of Pelicans may be able to join us for the second event which will take place on Saturday 4th September from 12.00 midday at St Mary's Abbey, (also known as Oulton Abbey) Oulton, Stone, Staffordshire ST15 8UW.

If you would like to be included in this next group, will you please let Mike Ellis know by e-mail Mike@Charters.eu.com as soon as possible, but certainly before Tuesday 31st August 2010. Peter can accommodate up to fourteen individuals in his accommodation, some are single rooms others are doubles. Please let Mike know what your requirements will be. "
