MONTEVIOT HOUSE
Jedburgh, Scotland

1948-58 (Theology)

(source : James Youdale)

As yet, there is no comprehensive history of the White's Fathers presence at Monteviot on our website. Fr Marchant's 'History of the White Fathers in Scotland' includes only passing references to it as a one-time College of Theology and (later) the main WF house for training Brothers. (see Page 11 of the HISTORIES section).

It would appear that Monteviot's owner, Lord Lothian, granted the White Fathers a 10-year lease in 1948 ; the Hall was finally handed back to him in 1958 and thereafter Scholasticates were trained at Totteridge.

• Jim Youdale writes (February 2008) : 'Just to clarify, in 1958 Monteviot was no longer House of Theology but was the British Novitiate House for 6 months prior to moving to Dorking.'

• Maurice Billingsley has provided two links to up-to-date views of Monteviot (August2013):

• The names of Monteviots' Scholasticates and Brothers provided below includes only UK personnel : no data is available at present to prove that this list is in any way comprehensive. However, it is displayed in chronological order for your convenience and you will notice that the novices held captive at St Denis (Paris) were the first to be resident at Monteviot.

(I'd be grateful for any further information that you can provide).

Burns Night at Monteviot 1958 ?

Can anyone identify the participants, please ?

Emma Smith (daughter of Godric Smith) writes: "My Dad recognised Father Pat Murphy - he's the thinner-faced gentleman who is laughing, with one finger on his lips - he is 3rd from the right on the far side of the table. "

The view towards the old football field.

Note that the the bridge across the Teviot has gone

Jim Youdale writes (February 2008) :

With regard to Robbie Dempsey's query (on the Messageboard),
the photo in question was taken from the garden "ramparts"
at Monteviot looking across the River Teviot.
The field on the other side of the river served as a soccer pitch
and access was by a bridge. If memory serves me
correctly type of suspension similar but smaller than
that at St Boswells. It has now disappeared.
