J J Deeney

I have just received a message from John Deeney’s daughter that he died last week.
John started with me at St. Columba’s in 1956. The last time I saw him was at a Pelicans reunion in Bishops Waltham some years ago. He turned 79 in February this year. We shared the same birthdate, 7 February.
May God rest his soul.

Peter McKenzie

I am sure a small group of ex White Father students may remember where they were 60 years ago today.June 1st 1963 We had been playing football and then went for a swim in the lough. After a while we realized that Peter was missing and although we tried we were not able to save him. That day changed the lives of many.I may be wrong but I don’t think that anyone in that year became a White Father .A great guy and a great friend.Rest in peace Peter.

Re: Peter McKenzie

I was on the shore of the lough when he died. It’s a memory that will be with me forever. I watched the whole thing from the shore, unable to do anything. He was not a good swimmer but jumped in from the boat, expecting to be caught by Bob Johnson (deceased), but he slipped out of Bob’s arms and went under. He evidently panicked. It was horrible to watch. He occupied the room next to me. A great footballer and mathematician.
God rest his soul.

Fr. Pierre Aucoin

I have to report that Fr. Pierre died last year, aged over 90, I think that he was around 92. He was a French Canadian.
He taught me, and many others at St. Columba’s, French and Gregorian music. He was also very interested in photography and had his own dark room in the college.

2nd November is 57th Anniversary of Fire at St Columbas

Just a reminder that today is the 57th Anniversary of The Fire at St Columbas which I remember with great clarity. Greetings to everyone else who was there on that day.

Re: 2nd November is 57th Anniversary of Fire at St Columbas

Hi Michael
I remember that day clearly. The only other of our cohort I am still in touch with is Pat Gritton. We met a few times about 10 years ago and continue to exchange emails, mostly about Celtic!
Take care

Mike Mearns

I was very sad to read on the ex-WFers net that Mike (Michael Joseph Patrick) Mearns has died. I am sure Michael Goodstadt will have more to add.
