Bishop's Waltham Y-station Listening post in WW2

I visited Bletchley Park a couple of years ago and the first thing I learnt
was that there had been a 'Listening station' set up in Bishop's
Waltham during WW2. I discovered nothing further about this until I found a webpage:-

Hello

Congratulations to those who have produced the new site and thanks to Paul West who did a great job for so long.
I have finally decided to retire from computer programming apart from a couple of clients and concentrate on music. I took up the piano and clarinet 4 years ago after a triple bypass slowed me down a bit. The 1500 sq Metres of tomatoes I grew had already stopped after the first stent.
However my sheep still greet me with enthusiasm every morning. Plus the wallabies. Now that my last dog has departed they feel free to enter his domain of the house acre. Isn't it amazing animals prefer to be fed prepared food rather than enjoy nature's bounty. No wonder McDonald's do so well to my absolute horror they are everywhere.
Exchanged emails with Nimmo this morning aka Commander W J Nimmo-Scott OBE now there is a success story. However he is now chief cook and bottle washer to a Wife, Daughter and two grand children. Both Wife and daughter were Naval officers of lesser rank than himself however much like me the presence of a lady of the house means we get to do the heads -:)
Does anyone know the fate of Father Fitzgerald - the last I heard he was living in Long Island probably with Billy Joel playing piano for him - lucky devil.
Happy Easter one and all. I shall be celebrating 46 years of marriage.

The view alone is worth 400,000 quid, in my opinion.

Medal Award

I am pleased to let all my Pelican friends know that on Sunday the 16th of June I will be presented at Mass with the Benemerenti Medal. This medal has been awarded by Pope Frances to me for over 50 years as a member of the St Vincent De Paul and my work within the parish.
Although I was a member of the White Fathers for a very short time I am of the opinion that that time set me on a the road to this out come and I am very grateful to the White Fathers and the friends I made there. Thank You.

Tom

St Columba's

Just made our annual visit to St Cs and this time with our two granddaughters. Brian (caretaker) tells me proposed sale has now been withdrawn. It would appear that restrictions re a number of development proposals ( definitely no hotel/ housebuilding permitted) has put potential buyers off. It also seems there are a number of other Restrictive Covenants in force. When Scottish Enterprise took over, significant money was invested ( probably government/ Euro grants). However, it does seem that the venture was unsuccessful. Externally, basic maintenance is lacking. The garden ( created in 70's and boasting all manner of experimental fruit tress and veg) is now an overgrown inaccessible jungle. However, fortunately, the graves are still reasonably tidy. Outside could certainly do with a lick of paint. But it appears there is no money available for this.

Prior to our visit, just by sheer chance we discovered a website offering accommodation in 6 converted barns ( now self cater cottages ) at the foot of the Eildons and a mere 2mins ( by car) from Melrose town centre. At £376 for 4 of us for 3 night stay, will definitely use this for future visits. Google Eildon Cottages for anyone interested.

Time was I and my fellow 13 yr old seminarians could scamper up all 3 Eildon Hills in one afternnon. My two granddaughters and I set off to climb at least one. I am sure we would have reached the top but the younger one could go no further. Nevertheless, the view was spectacular. Can definitely recommend the climb for a good night's sleep.

The weather was unexpectedly superb. Sunshine each day. Decided to take a run up to North Berwick ( Bass Rock and The Law). How that place has changed since 1956 when Dryburgh House went there on a day trip from St Cs with Geoff Riddle and Bro Didicus.

Michael Fitzgerald MAfr.

Just heard that Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald MAfr., has been made Cardinal. Last I heard ( about 3 months ago ). he and two other WFs had taken on pastoral responsibility for the parish of St.Vincent in South Liverpool.

Normandy - 1944

Please see the 8th photo down on [GALLERY] page 378
for an interesting clipping from The Universe (27-Jan-1961).
Fr. Tom Stoker, from Leeds, was appointed an Army Chaplain in 1943
and the following year was in the thick of D-DAY.
Fr Stoker was superior at St. Columba's from '60 through '63
when I was a student there - will we ever forget him ???

Re: Normandy - 1944

Fr Stoker was later giving retreats in occupied Germany. See Martin Dempsey, ed: The Priest among the Soldiers, London, Burns and Oates,1947. If you can find it! I think he comes into Aylward Shorter's book as well. Enough PTSD there to say tout comprendre c'est tout pardoner!
