Happy New Year

Happy new Year to one and all from the antipodes. I have just found the new board and wish many thanks to Paul for his work over the many years. This was a great relief valve to me when I first found it.
Sunny and 22C today in Tasmania whereas the North Island appears to be scorching in 40c plus. I have finally almost retired and will resume my Clarinet and piano lessons shortly. The triple bypass has done wonders for my health and music study keeps the grey matter rocking. I had considered drums and am currently reading "Not Dead Yet" by Phil Collins so here's a drum check
Musician rocked up at the Golden Gates and heard a magnificent solo. He enquired of St. Peter "Is That Buddy Rich?"
No That's God he just thinks he's Buddy Rich

Hank

I was cruising the History section after more Hughes tit-bits when I came across a piece from a WF magazine about Hank's appointment to the Priory. Someone was having a dig at his shortness of height. In the nicest possible way. Go to History 54 and enjoy!

Memories

As I watch Le Tour de France with our local lad Richie Porte going pretty well - I met him at my Cardiac Rehab class when he gave a talk on his fitness regime to our teachers. No wonder he can go so fast he is only 60Kgs and I am 95Kgs. Memories returned of our visit to Lourdes from the Priory when we stayed in a paratroop camp. We were stunned by the concrete pad with holes that served as a toilet and wandered far to find a proper loo, only to see priests going into the ladies. Unisex is fine now in 195x it was a shock. Does anyone remember the date? I got to serve mass at one of the side altars in the main basilica for a priest from the crowd - apparently seminarians stood out like a sore thumb as I was on my own at the time. When I remember the state of the water in the sacred bath I think that the EU regulations must have closed that avenue long ago. The Newhaven to Dieppe ferry was my first experience of how awful sea travel can be, I have seen worse as I left England in 1965 crossing the Bay of Biscay in a force 9 gale - Nimmo, why would anyone join the surface navy? At least you went for the peace 1000 feet down. Who was the Irish lad that used an old gramophone case for a suitcase and dropped the lot on the quay?
Talking of Cardiac rehab what they do now is amazing. February this year part of my triple bypass failed so they stented another hole. That makes 6 lights and music trips to hospital over 20 years and they can still plug the holes. By the way if you have heard of the white light I can assure you that it is absolutely brilliant yet enormously peaceful. By golly you are cold when you come back though.
My clarinet and piano classes continue apace. One does these things after a big scare like a triple bypass, got to get the most out of the final years.
Best wishes all

Blacklion Sept 1967

Hello to all readers, I am just recalling that exactly
50 years ago this week I travelled by train from Birmingham
to Holyhead and got the boat to Dun Laoghaire, then a bus
from Dublin to Enniskillen and a lift to St. Augustine's at Blacklion.
I am sure there are many Pelicans who would agree that
spending a year there, or two in my case, was indeed an
extraordinary and unforgettable experience !

Re: Blacklion Sept 1967

The Blacklion experience is certainly worth remembering Robbie! I was only there for 18 months, but I still feel it's not to be forgotten and for me I reckon it was quite foundational!
And I was there again a couple of weeks ago, taking photos from the road. Building hardly visible because the trees had grown so much. I remember the site as being quite open and bleak, whereas it's quite wooded now.
First time I've been in Ireland since I was in my 20's! Stayed with my niece who is near Ballymena for 6 months studying curlews for RSPB, and made a trip to Blacklion and then on to friends in Donegal.
All the best to you, Robbie, and to anyone else I know who happens to read this!

Re: Blacklion Sept 1967

Just like Robbie, I travelled to St.Augustin's in September 1967 but starting at Glasgow airport for a flight to Belfast, then into the city to get an Ulsterbus to Enniskillen. I think we then caught the Sligo bus that dropped us off at the college. It was the start of what I have always called the best year of my life. I think but am not certain that I was joined by Robin Russell, Owen Gormley and Ian Scott.

Loughan House Open Centre.

Hi to all Pelican family. This to tell you all that my sister Mairead and myself go once each week to chat the residents and sing a few songs for them.
This reminds us of the good old days at St Agustine's in 1960s, when we took the students to entertain at old peoples homes in Enniskillen. We look on the resedents as students of WFs.

Fr John Lynch

I was so sad to hear from Mike Ellis, that Father John Lynch had died in Florida. I was talking to his sister yesterday (Sunday)she told me that Fr John had been walking to a meeting when he was knocked over by cyclists hitting his head on the road. He was taken to hospital but sadly he did not survive.
Fr Lynch was from my Parish (Holy Name Oakley Fife) and I am sure I was an alter boy when he was Ordained here.
I spoke to him a while ago on one of his visits home at that time he was yet to decide if he was staying in America or coming home to Scotland.

Please pray for the repose of Father Johns soul and for his sisters and their families.

Best Regards

Tom

Dick Kinlen

I am recalling a full TEN years I spent with Dick Kinlen growing
up as yougsters in St Columba's then teenagers at the Priory,
plus 2 years at Blacklion. Dick and I surely had many scrapes
- the earliest was sitting on a huge floating tree trunk that we launched
down the Tweed and paddled off for Berwick. Of course we didn't get too far
- except very wet. Nowadays this would result in a terrific
Health & Safety video.

Here is The Lord's Prayer for Dick
.....in Lingala...(pinched from Wikipedia)...:
(start with 'biso' meaning 'we' e.g, Pesa biso ='give us'.)

Tata wa biso, ozala o likoló,
bato bakúmisa Nkómbó ya Yo,
bandima bokonzi bwa Yo, mpo elingo Yo,
basálá yangó o nsé,
lokóla bakosalaka o likoló
Pesa biso lelo biléi bya mokolo na mokolo,
límbisa mabé ma biso,
lokóla biso tokolimbisaka baníngá.
Sálisa biso tondima masenginyá te,
mpe bíkisa biso o mabé.

Amen. May he rest in peace - and please
do not forget the people of Eastern Congo.

Dick of course was something of a poet. Does anyone else remember (to Daily, daily, sing to Mary):
Huffy (John Fowles), Puffy(Joe Haigh), run to Duffy,
All about the Priory boys,
They are smoking and they're drinking
And they're making too much noise.

Just remembering Dick Kinlen's passing away
this time last year in 2016 ......

Oft, in the stilly night,
Ere Slumber's chain has bound me,
Fond Memory brings the light
Of other days around me;
The smiles, the tears,
Of boyhood's years,
The words of love then spoken;
The eyes that shone,
Now dimm'd and gone,
The cheerful hearts now broken!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere Slumber's chain hath bound me,
Sad Memory brings the light
Of other days around me. (T. Moore)

The provision of ashes-to-go via the drive-through
Ash Wednesday service this week at a County Galway
church was a tremendous success. But an emigrant
in Australia writes to the Irish Times that this is
really uncalled for because the carbon footprint

Fr John Lynch

Further to my last few words about Fr John, my plan was to have a few words with some of the people that new John when he was young in our parish.
Mrs O'Donnel was in Johns class at School in Cowdenbeath she remembers that he used to sit behind a girl with blond hair and dip it into the ink well which did not go down well.
Unfortunately I have just heard some more sad news regarding Fr Johns sister Elizabeth, who lived in Australia, she has just past away.
I remember her as my primary 2 school teacher many years ago.
Please remember in your prayers Mrs Hanlon their surviving sister who has had a very hard few months loosing both of her siblings in such a short space of time.

Re: Charlie Bingham (1953 - 63)

Saddened to hear of Charlie's demise: I offer a few memories.

Charlie and I met up for the first time in early September 1953 when we began in the first form at St Boswells. I cannot remember if Charlie was involved with the farm in those early days; I know I was, since my manual work task in my second year was to look after the 3 pigs under the diligent eye of Bother Didicus. Ever after our time in Scotland, Charlie would have been up to the top of his wellies in the diffuse doings of the farms at the Priory and Blacklion. This was Charlie’s avocation. He revelled in it, whether it was: sanding eggs smooth for the market, mucking out the byre, or helping in the farrowing of the sow.
On one occasion, Charlie had been less than attentive to the lecture of ‘Pancho’ O’Mahoney, looking out of the study hall window at the comings and goings of the farm – Bother Paddy tending the turkey flock with Hickey at his heels. Pancho, who had been talking about diffusing tension by not letting small things build up and cause a big reaction, asked Charlie to stay behind for a chat at the end of the period. The rest of us filed out into the corridor only to hear our lecturer explode “ You’ve been looking out at the farm for the whole term and I’ve had enough”. Whooops!
We played fullback on The Priory 2ND eleven in our sixth form, 1958-9 season, Charlie on the left. It was the heyday of the Real Madrid ascendancy in the European Cup so we took to addressing each other as Carlos and Miguel. Charlie was an uncompromising tackler much in the mode of Santamaria, the famous Real centre-half of that time.
In the Summer of 1961, we went on a hitchhiking holiday in France together. Charlie wore a kilt, which led to us getting plenty of lifts, the “Auld Alliance” still strong in those days. When we arrived at the house of a friend of my family, the housekeeper left us on the step while she reported the presence of “a man and a very funny-looking lady”. Our return ferry journey took place during a huge Channel storm. Charlie was completely unaffected by motion sickness while all the other passengers suffered mightily. As he strolled about smoking the last of his Gitanes, a Glaswegiam gent called to him “D’ye ‘hink we’ll ever see Scotland agin?” Chalie’s response “Oh sure” did not seem to convince him. We landed in Newhaven after a trip of 5½ hours – normal crossing time was three hours.

When Charlie left Gap, he came down to London to work for HM Customs & Excise. We had a good time maturing, together with Paul Tait, after the restraints of ten plus years of seminary life. We shared the angst of dealing with the radical change in our lives in a situation for which we had little preparation, supporting each other in heartbreaks. Pints of Youngers helped us through these tough times.
So Charlie has gone to the big farm in the sky. May he rest in peace. Among his many talents, I will remember him for his sharp wit. An example: when told that a former student was planning on joining the RAF ( National Service was still in effect) Charlie commented, in his gruff Bathgate accent, “ the only raf that will have him is the riffraff”.
