from the Scotsman (below), enclosed is a photo from 1993.
My son Liam wanted to do what so many Pelicans have done over the years.
He was aided and abetted by his old man, who while hoisting him up, contemplated
how indeed life was lived in circles.'

Unknown statue of 'Braveheart' to get revamp
A RELATIVELY unknown statue of Sir William Wallace is to get a revamp
with lottery cash to mark the 700th anniversary of the death of Scotlands
greatest patriot.
The 30ft-high red sandstone monument has been located in the heart
of the Borders countryside for almost 200 years. Wallace, with broadsword
in his right hand and shield resting in his left, stands looking over
the River Tweed with breathtaking views of the Eildon Hills and surroundings.
It has been described as one of Scotlands "hidden treasures"
as very few people knew of its existence close to the village of Dryburgh,
near St Boswells.
But a £40,000 public fundraising campaign to restore the decaying
statue a decade ago resulted in sign posts being erected and a flood
of tourists.
Now to commemorate the 700th anniversary of "Bravehearts"
death in 1305, the car park at the tourist attraction is to be expanded
to accommodate 24 vehicles and a pathway to the remote statue resurfaced
making it suitable for wheelchair users.
The uneven grassy surface around the statue will also be resurfaced
with discreet safety fencing installed.
Margaret Street, vice-convener of the Saltire Society, led the public
fundraising campaign to restore the crumbling monument ten years ago.
The statue, which was originally painted white, was cleaned, re-pointed
and graffiti removed after £40,000 was raised by an appeal.
She said: "I am delighted that this work is being carried out
in the 700th anniversary. I have been going to Dryburgh most of my
life and you hardly saw anybody there. But with the popularity of
the Braveheart film, there is so much interest in Wallace and the
statue is now a major tourist attraction." |

Jim Connelly thinks that the unidentified
people were 'brother' novices. He writes (28-03-05) : "Perhaps
Mike Mearns might confirm or correct that the surname of novice "Mike"
to the right of Mike Kelly was possibly "Mead". Rumour had it
that when he commenced his postulancy he was either a director or owner
of a tool company. Whilst at Blacklion he spent most of his free time
working with Brother Paddy on the farm and clearly relished this pursuit.
I think he was woken in the early hours one morning by Bro Paddy to assist
the farm sow in giving birth to piglets. Townies such as myself went up
to the farm after breakfast to see the new born piglets."

Mike Mearns writes "Mike Kelly and
the two novices on (his) right are brother novices note the all
black cross on the rosary. The two are Mike ?, and Dick ? from Dover.
These two did their 6 months postulancy at Blacklion. Dick was there in
September 1960 and fomed part of the trio: Tom, Dick & Harry.
Tom was a postulant from Newcastle and Harry
was the Master of Postulants Fr. Harry
Moreton. "
