ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MEETING WITH PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM EPILEPSY
As usual at the beginning of each year, we bring together all the patients suffering from epilepsy and who are recipients of donated drugs that we receive from AMAP.
Compared to last year, at the start of this year 2021 we have not seen many new cases seeking enrollment. The number remained more or less stable (we had 76 people;
men and women; young and old and after the meeting we noticed one death and there was a new case)
It should be noted here in passing that today's meeting saw the participation and intervention of Doctor CISSE, who represented Doctor Safouna DIAKITE, chief physician
of the Reference Health Center of Nioro du Sahael (CSREF). His intervention helped the patients to better understand this disease and especially how to take charge of the
patient in the event of a crisis.
So today what can we say about the wellbeing of our patients?
Positive aspects
In this Monday March 01, 2021 in the parish hall, we had an annual meeting with the sick to listen to them and see how they are doing. But it was also an opportunity to
answer three fundamental questions, namely:
• What are the difficulties that patients encounter in obtaining medication?
• How does this drug affect their bodies?
• How important is the semi-annual check?
First of all, let's say that we are satisfied with the fact that the patients realize that the free reception of this drug is a real benefit for them. Many are faithful and regular to the
monthly appointment to collect the drugs. More than 90% of patients come to withdraw their medication on the exact date of the appointment and follow the doctor's advice
very well, which justifies the stability of the condition of these patients.
During the meeting, we give the floor to the patients as well as their companions to say how they feel while taking the drug regularly and this year again all the testimonies
that we received were very good. Those who are regular, say they are seeing a very big change as patients no longer have chronic seizures and many are even
aware of when the seizure is going to happen and are making arrangements so that the patient does not get injured. Others say they have resumed small
activities in their villages because their health has become stable. Still others have been reintegrated into their community which had almost rejected them due to
this disease. The young woman who had returned to her husband's house last year confirmed that since she started meeting her date, she has seen a huge change. In short,
there is a positive impact when there is a good follow-up in the taking of these drugs.
Regarding supply difficulties, some patients said that given the distance and the state of the roads connecting their villages to the town of Nioro, during the rainy season
it is often difficult to get to Nioro to take their medication. With that, they had offered since last year if we could give them the drugs for two or three months in a row.
With the advice of the Doctor who was present, we decided not to respond positively to this request because the place and the way to store the medicines are problematic.
Also, the fact of making an appointment every month allows us to keep a permanent contact with the patients and this facilitates the follow-up.
Added to this was the check-up at the hospital every 6 months. This is a very complex issue here because people think that we have to pay their fees for consultations and
other exams. We continue to raise awareness but also if we find other benefactors who can help us in this direction, I am sure and certain that it will do good to these patients,
most of whom are abandoned to their sad fate.
Current stock of medicines
For the moment we are left with 7 and a half boxes of Carbamazepine 200mg, there is no risk of being out of stock for the moment.
With regard to delivery of the drugs, here again we want to insist on asking that drugs no longer be sent via transfer agencies, as was the case last time. We had to pay
200,000 FCFA (Two hundred thousand CFA francs, or 304 Euros) to be able to recover at customs. When the drugs come by post, it is cheaper for us and we collect
them directly here in Nioro without making the trip to Bamako which is located more than 485 km from Nioro.
